Description

1 case of 24 5oz Bags of Benne Wafer Unique to the Lowcountry since Colonial times, Benne (which is the Bantu word for sesame) was brought from East Africa and planted extensively throughout the South. Many Lowcountry recipes call for this tasty toasted seed, but none is so loved as the Benne Wafer. A Charleston favorite, our recipe dates back over 100 years and is believed to be the original Benne Wafer recipe. Our Benne Wafers are thin crispy wafers made with toasted Benne Seeds which impart a rich, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor and carry a toasty aroma. For best taste, eat within 6 months. Please store indoors in a cool, dry location.

Olde Colony BakeryEstablished 1945

Our bakery was created in the late 1940s when Peter Kikos, a two-time Bronze Star recipient and WWII veteran, and his wife Leila, a Charleston native, decided to take their beautiful wedding cakes from their home kitchen to the commercial market. From these humble roots in post-war Charleston, they also perfected our Original Benne Wafer using a recipe that dated back well over 100 years, even in the 1940s. Since then, our bakery and the Benne Wafer have become legends throughout the Lowcountry, flourishing through location changes, shifts in ownership, and recipe refinements. We once called Downtown Charleston home but have since crossed the harbor to Mount Pleasant, where we now stand as one of the city’s enduring relics. Over nearly eight decades, we’ve watched Charleston transform, and we’re proud to still be one of the very few small local businesses that has remained amidst Charleston’s dramatic evolution since the 1940s. Savor a bag of our Original Benne Wafers—or any of our eight handcrafted flavors—and taste the soul of the South in every crisp bite. Rooted in over 75 years of Charleston tradition, each wafer blends rich history with the dedication we pour into every handmade batch.
